Plinia sp. Red Pouch is a jaboticaba cultivar introduced to the United States around 2021 from Hong Kong which is a Plinia of unconfirmed species. Red Pouch is likely a Plinia phitrantha or atleast phitrantha is the dominant ancestor in the case of a hybrid. Indicators of phitrantha genes include the 1-4 large seeds, short juvenile period bearing fruit at just 4-7 years of age from seed, minor costate ribs on the fruit and the large lanceolate leaves. The flat dark green leaves have an impressed primary nerve with minor secondary pinnate veins, a dull sheen, and a very minor crease along the primary vein which can also have a slightly wrinkled appearance near the primary vein. The fruit is globose on the apex side. The other side of the fruit has a teardrop shapped point where the fruit connects to the penduncle creatign a "pouch" shape which is the cultvar's defining characterstic and origin of its name. The fruit may have minor remenants of the sepal on the apex which is easily wiped off or eaten with the fruit. The fruit typically grows by itself or in small clusters of up to 6 fruit. The fruit contains 1-4 large seeds. The sweet juicy pulp is of excellent quality and similar to other jaboticabas.
