Plinia sp. nov. "Caipirinha" jaboticaba is known as Bonsai Jaboticaba due to is dwarf size and dense crown making it perfect for bonsai applications. The species rarely reaches higher than two meters height but can grow up to 6 meters wide in its native area. It grows at a pace similar to Plinia jaboticaba "Sabara" the first few years from seed and then begins to slow down. The species shares many characteristics with Plinia jaboticaba "Sabara" except everything is smaller. The leaves and fruit are are about 1/2 to 1/3 the size of Sabara. This species is thought to be in the process of getting a proper botanical description and species name by a qualified botanist. It is thought to be native to the central-eastern region of Minas Gerais, Brazil in a transition zone between the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado at altitudes above 800 meters. The fruits are typical of jaboticaba - globose with smooth and shiny black skin, and may be crowned by a small clear cross at the apex. A watery pulp with a very sweet flavor, much appreciated. Caipirinha is a popular alcoholic drink made with cachaca (rum), sugar and lime and it is not understood why this species was given that name.
