Regular Mulchi:

Plinia inflata (Mulchi) is native the western Amazon in Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. They are found in the tropics up to 500 meters in altitude and thus are not likely to survive a freeze and may suffer damage at temperatures a little above freezing. Adult trees grow to about 5 meters tall and, if they have room to grow, will take on a spreading growth habit. Seedlings flower anywhere in the 5-15 year range with high variability and produce globose yellow fruits that are 5-8 cm. diameter and 7-10 cm. long with a rostrate point at the connection with the peduncle. There is a 1 cm indented apical disk that may have minor remnants of the sepal. The pulp is succulent, sweet, abundant, and of good flavor. The fruit is not very aromatic. The pulp portion closest to the seed may have more fiber. The tree can produce multiple times per year after several years of production and is a heavy producer. It is related to the other "yellow Plinias" such as Plinia edulis (Cambuca), Plinia clausa (Anihuayo), and Plinia salticola (Dwarf Mulchi).

Giant Mulchi:

There is a selection of Plinia inflata called "Giant Mulchi" which is known to grow near the town of Tena, Ecuador where there are multiple trees producing the significantly larger fruit. This suggests that the larger fruit genes are likely inheritable by seed and vegetative propagation is not needed to get plants with large fruit. "Giant" Mulchi may be simply a large selection of Mulchi or possibly genetically distinct enough to be classified as its own species. The average seed weight of 10.0 grams is 454% larger than the average seed weight of regular Mulchi at 2.3 grams. The fruit weight of "Giant Mulchi" is at least double that of regular Mulchi.
