Comments:

The fruit pulp aroma has a pungent smell that might be described as methane or mildly caustic / chemical like when picked too early.  The fruit should be picked once it has fallen off the tree for maximum ripeness.  Picked too early its smells too strong and taste too much like garlic.  The flavor does have a mild garlic flavor but is also sweet and the flavor is not that bad really.  It is a gorgeous tree of medium size and they grow fine in zones 10a+.  Possibly dioecious like most Garcinias although they can fruit on their own.

From Wikipedia:

Garcinia spicata is a species of medium tree with 30 ft in the family Clusiaceae. It is native to India and Sri Lanka.[1] The tree produces a fruit which is edible and has been described as being similar to durian in flavor. It is sometimes called garlic fruit or bitter garcinia. It is planted as an ornamental in sea spray areas.[2]
